Truro (pronounced ; ) is a
city in
Cornwall,
England,
United Kingdom. It is the administrative centre and only city within the
county, and the most southerly city in
Great Britain. Truro's name has been said to be derived from the Cornish tri-veru meaning "three rivers". But the most reliable reference works (including the Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries of English place-names), do not accept this theory. At best, the Tru- part might mean "three", but even this is doubtful. The chief expert on Cornish place-names, Oliver Padel, in his book "A popular dictionary of Cornish place-names" (1988), says the `three rivers' meaning is "not possible".
