Transport Layer Security

Transport Layer Security (TLS) and its predecessor, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), are cryptographic protocols that provide secure communications on the Internet for such things as web browsing, e-mail, Internet faxing, instant messaging and other data transfers. There are slight differences between SSL and TLS, but the protocol remains substantially the same.

Transport Layer Security (TLS), anciennement nommé Secure Socket Layer (SSL), est un protocole de sécurisation des échanges sur Internet, développé à l'origine par Netscape (SSL version 2 et SSL version 3). Il a été renommé en Transport Layer Security (TLS) par l'IETF suite au rachat du brevet de Netscape par l'IETF en 2001. Le groupe de travail correspondant à l'IETF a permis la création des RFC 2246 pour le TLS et RFC 4347 pour son équivalent en mode datagramme, le DTLS.

Transport Layer Security (TLS) oder Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) ist ein hybrides Verschlüsselungsprotokoll für Datenübertragungen im Internet. TLS 1.0, 1.1 und 1.2 sind die standardisierten Weiterentwicklungen von SSL 3.0 (TLS 1.0 steht neu für SSL 3.1). SSL wird also nun unter dem Namen TLS weiterentwickelt. Hier wird die Abkürzung SSL für beide Bezeichnungen verwendet.

TLS (ang. Transport Layer Security) – przyjęte jako standard w Internecie rozwinięcie protokołu SSL (ang. Secure Socket Layer), w swojej pierwotnej wersji zaprojektowanego przez firmę Netscape Communications Corporation. TLS ma na celu zapewnienie poufności i integralności transmisji danych oraz zapewnienie uwierzytelnienia, opiera się na szyfrach asymetrycznych oraz certyfikatach standardu X.509.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) è un protocollo progettato dalla Netscape Communications Corporation, autrice del famoso browser Netscape Navigator per realizzare comunicazioni cifrate su Internet. La versione 3.0, rilasciata nel 1996, è stata utilizzata come base di sviluppo per il protocollo Transport Layer Security (TLS). TLS è un protocollo standard IETF che è definito nella RFC 2246 ("The TLS Protocol Version 1.0").
