Transoxiana

Transoxiana (sometimes spelled Transoxania) / Ma Wara'un-Nahr (Arabic: ما وراء النهر) / Farārood (Persian: فرارود) is the largely obsolete name used for the portion of Central Asia corresponding approximately with modern-day Uzbekistan, Tajikistan  and southwest Kazakhstan. Geographically, it means the region between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers. When used in the present, it usually implies that one is talking about that region in the time prior to about the 8th century AD, although the term continued to remain in use among western historians for several centuries after. In the Persian epic Shahnameh, written by the poet Ferdowsi, Transoxiana is the homeland of the Iranian nomadic tribes and the Oxus river is the border between Iran and Turan.

La Transoxiane (en arabe : mā warāʾ an-nahr, , « au-delà du fleuve », en ouzbek Movaraunahr) est l'ancien nom d'une partie de l'Asie centrale située au-delà du fleuve Oxus (actuel Amou-Daria). Elle correspond approximativement à l'Ouzbékistan moderne et au sud-ouest du Kazakhstan. Géographiquement, il s'agit de la région située entre les fleuves Amou-Daria et Syr-Daria. L'utilisation de ce terme de nos jours implique généralement que l'on parle de la région à une époque antérieure au . Cependant le terme est resté en usage parmi les historiens occidentaux plusieurs siècles après.

Transoxanien („Land jenseits des Oxus“; Oxus ist der antike Name des Amudarja) ist ein alter Name für eine Region in Zentralasien, die zwischen den Flüssen Amudarja und Syrdarja liegt. Der arabische Name lautet Mawarannahr , die auf den arabischen Namen zurückgehende usbekische Namensform Movarounnahr. Auch das türkische "Maveraünnehir" findet seinen Ursprung im Arabischen.

Transoxiana è il nome con cui si indicavano le regioni centro-asiatiche che si estendono a est della regione persiana del Khorasan e del fiume Oxus (oggi Amu Daria), attualmente coincidenti in gran parte con l'Uzbekistan e le regioni sud-occidentali del Kazakhstan.Gli Arabi musulmani e quanti si espressero con la loro lingua chiamarono tale ampia area - che per molto tempo non fece parte della Dar al-Islam - Ma wara‘ al-nahr (Ciò che è dietro il fiume) ed è in questa eterogenea regione - in cui confluivano elementi persiani, corasmi, del Farghana, turchi, sogdiani, cinesi, mongoli, tibetani e persino coreani - che in piena età abbaside furono edificate le importanti città di Bukhara e di Samarcanda (poi capitale dell'impero chagataide di Tamerlano) che oggi fanno parte del moderno Uzbekistan, già parte dell'Unione Sovietica.

Transoxanië (Over de Oxus; Oxus is de antieke naam van de rivier Amu Darja) is de naam van een historisch land in Centraal-Azië. Het was gelegen tussen de rivieren Amu Darja en Syr Darja. Het ligt grotendeels in het hedendaagse land Oezbekistan, maar ook gedeeltelijk in zuidwestelijk Kazachstan, Tadzjikistan en Turkmenistan.
