Translatio imperii

Translatio imperii, Latin for "transfer of rule", is a concept invented in the Middle Ages for describing history as a linear development: a succession of transfers of power from one supreme ruler (emperor) to the next.Jacques Le Goff describes the "translatio imperii" concept as typical for the Middle Ages for several reasons: the idea of linearity of time and history was typical for the Middle Ages; the "translatio imperii" idea typically also neglected simultaneous developments in other parts of the world (of no importance to medieval Europeans); the "translatio imperii" idea didn't separate divine history from the history of worldly power: medieval Europeans considered divine (supernatural) and material things as part of the same continuum, which was their "reality". Also the causality of one reign necessarily leading to its successor was often detailed by the medieval chroniclers, and is seen as a typical medieval approach.

Translatio imperii (lat. Übertragung des Reichs) ist eine Theorie des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit, derzufolge ein Weltreich das andere ablöst.Es handelt sich dabei um eine im Mittelalter verbreitete Geschichtsauffassung, derzufolge Geschichte linear verläuft und eine Herrschaft (eines Fürsten oder eines Landes) stets zu einer Folgeherrschaft (eines anderen Fürsten oder Landes) führt. Weiterhin trennten mittelalterliche Geschichtsschreiber nicht zwischen göttlicher und weltlicher Geschichte, da diese in ihren Augen zusammenhingen.

Translatio imperii (letterlijk: overdracht van de macht) is het middeleeuws idee dat het Romeins keizerschap wordt overgedragen van het ene volk op het andere.Het is ontwikkeld om het ideaal van het imperium christianum te verwezenlijken. Eén God, één Kerk, één keizer.Dit principe werd toegepast toen Karel de Grote tot keizer werd gekroond door paus Leo III. Ook werd dit principe toegepast toen de Duitse koning Otto I op initiatief van paus Johannes XII tot keizer werd gekroond.

Translatio imperii ("transferência de poder", em latim) é um conceito criado na Europa medieval para descrever a história como um fenômeno linear: uma sucessão de transferências de poder de um governante supremo (imperador) para o seguinte.Jacques le Goff descreve o conceito de translatio imperii como típico da Idade Média por vários motivos: a idéia da linearidade do tempo e da história era comum à época; o conceito de translatio imperii ignorava os eventos simultâneos em outras partes do mundo (desimportantes para os europeus medievais); a idéia de translatio imperii não separava a história divina da história do poder temporal, consideradas como uma única "realidade". Ademais, os cronistas medievais costumavam descrever em detalhes a causalidade da sucessão de um reino para outro, o que é considerado uma abordagem tipicamente medieval.
