The term may also be used in a derogatory manner to refer to mobile home parks or manufactured home communities.In the United States, tornadoes and hurricanes often inflict their worst damage on trailer parks, usually because the structures are not secured to the ground and their construction is significantly less able to withstand high wind forces than regular houses. However, most modern manufactured homes are built to withstand high winds, using hurricane straps and proper foundations.

Eine Wohnwagensiedlung ist ein Stadtteil bzw. eine sonstige Wohngegend, wo ausschließlich Wohnwagen oder aus mehreren Wohnwagen zusammengesetzte Häuser (Mobile Homes) aufgestellt sind.Im Englischen wird der Ausdruck trailer park (von trailer = Anhänger) dahingehend verwendet, um die finanziell schwache Bevölkerung des Landes zu typisieren, da Wohnwagen-Häuser eine preiswerte Möglichkeit darstellen, zu einem Eigenheim zu gelangen. Auch in den Niederlanden gibt es eine ähnlich sozial schwache Bevölkerung, die in sogenannten woonwagenkamps lebt. Das größte und bekannteste liegt nahe Maastricht und heißt Vikenslag. Wohnwagenbewohner werden in den Niederlanden abwertend woonwagenbewoners genannt. Diese soziale Randgruppe entwickelte sich Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Un campo caravan o parcheggio per camper, (in inglese trailer park) é un vicinato che consiste di un area di terra attrezzata con piazzole in cemento e connessione rimovibile a servizi di acqua corrente, elettricità, gas e fognature dove i caravan possono parcheggiare per lungo tempo rimanendo pienamente operativi come abitazioni. Quando utilizzato adeguatamente, il termine si riferisce soltanto ad aree dove stazionano caravan, roulotte o altri veicoli che sono progettati per l'impiego ricreativo, e che soltanto come ripiego possono essere impiegati come abitazioni stabili. Il termine può anche essere utilizzato in un modo denigratorio per riferirsi ai parcheggi di case mobili o comunità abitative (temporanee o semi-permanenti) di prefabbricati, spesso sistemati o edificati come risposta alla presenza di persone sfollate in seguito ad una calamità naturale.
