Tory

In the political tradition of some English-speaking countries, the term Tory has referred to a variety of political parties and creeds since it was first coined in the late 18th century to describe opponents to the Whigs. English Tories from the time of the Glorious Revolution up until the Reform Bill of 1832 were characterized by strong monarchist tendencies, support of the Church of England, and hostility to reform, while the Tory Party was an actual organization which held power intermittently throughout the same period.

„Tory“ (in der Mehrzahl: die Tories) nennt man ein Mitglied der Konservativen Partei des britischen Parlaments bzw. einen derer Anhänger und Sympathisanten. Die Tories traten für die Rechte der Krone und die Anglikanische Kirche ein. Mancherorts ist zu lesen, der Name sei eine Verschleifung des irischen Rufes: "Tar a Ri", was "Komm o König" bedeutet; dies war der Kampfruf der Anhänger ("Kavaliere") König Karls I. von England im Englischen Bürgerkrieg. Wissenschaftliche Quellen leiten das Wort her vom mittelirischen Wort tóraidhe, neuirisch tóraí —  Gesetzloser, Räuber, aus dem irischen tóir, "Verfolgung", da Gesetzlose "verfolgte Männer" waren.Auch die Konservativen in Kanada werden gemeinhin als "Tories" bezeichnet.
