Toronto
Toronto (, colloquially ) is the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. It is located in Southern Ontario on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. A relatively modern city, Toronto's history dates back to the late-18th century, when its land was first purchased by the British monarchy from the Mississaugas of the New Credit. The settlement was later established as the Town of York and proclaimed as the new capital of Upper Canada by its lieutenant-governor, John Graves Simcoe. In 1834, York was incorporated as a city and renamed to its present name. The city was ransacked in the Battle of York during the War of 1812 and damaged in two great fires in 1849 and in 1904. Since its incorporation, Toronto has repeatedly expanded its borders through amalgamation with surrounding municipalities, most recently in 1998.

Toronto ist mit 2,5 Millionen Einwohnern die größte Stadt Kanadas und die Hauptstadt der Provinz Ontario. Sie liegt im Golden Horseshoe (Goldenes Hufeisen), einer Region mit über 8,1 Millionen Einwohnern, die sich halbkreisförmig um das westliche Ende des Ontariosees bis zu den Niagarafällen erstreckt. Rund ein Drittel der Bevölkerungszunahme des ganzen Landes entfiel in den letzten Jahren auf diesen Großraum. Die Einwohnerzahl der Metropolregion (Census Metropolitan Area) stieg von 4,1 Millionen im Jahre 1992 auf 5,1 Millionen im Jahre 2006. Die Greater Toronto Area hatte 2006 über 5,5 Millionen Einwohner.

Toronto
Toronto är den största staden i Kanada och provinshuvudstad i Ontario. 2006 hade Toronto 2 503 281 invånare och totalt 5 113 149 i storstadsregionen. Staden är ett av de viktigaste finans- och handelcentrumen i Kanada och Nordamerika. Staden har mer än 80 etniska tillhörigheter och över 100 skilda språk, vilket även gör staden till en av de mest multikulturella i världen.

Toronto – największe miasto Kanady położone w południowej części prowincji Ontario, której jest stolicą. Miasto pełni funkcję ekonomicznej i kulturalnej stolicy Kanady. Ludność miasta wynosi 2 518 772 (2004), a w zespole miejskim Toronto 5 715 386 (2004).
Toronto jest najbardziej wieloetnicznym miastem świata, zamieszkanym przez ponad 150 grup etnicznych, w 2001 roku miasto otrzymało nadany przez ONZ tytuł: World's Most Multicultural City.
Język angielski jest językiem ojczystym dla mniej niż 52% mieszkańców Toronto. Ponad 50% obecnych mieszkańców Toronto jest imigrantami, co daje miastu drugie miejsce na świecie co do ich liczby po Miami. Polonia w zespole miejskim Toronto, według badań Kanadyjskiego Urzędu Statystycznego, liczy 166 700 osób. Nieoficjalnie ocenia się, że ta liczba jest ponad dwukrotnie większa. Wg. oficjalnych statystyk 79 875 torontończyków mówi po polsku.
