Toronto

Toronto (, local pronunciation ) is the largest city in Canada and is the provincial capital of Ontario, making it the seat of the provincial Crown. It is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. With over 2.5 million residents, it is the fifth-most populous municipality in North America. Toronto is at the heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and is part of a densely-populated region in south-central Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe which is home to over eight million residents. The census metropolitan area (CMA) had a population of 5,113,149, and the Greater Toronto Area had a population of 5,555,912 at the 2006 Census.

Rund ein Drittel der Bevölkerungszunahme des ganzen Landes entfiel in den letzten Jahren auf den Großraum Toronto. Die Einwohnerzahl der Metropolregion (Census Metropolitan Area) stieg von 4,1 Millionen im Jahre 1992 auf 5,5 Millionen im Jahre 2006.

Ludność miasta wynosi 2 518 772 (2004), a w zespole miejskim Toronto 5 715 386 (2004). Toronto jest najbardziej wieloetnicznym miastem świata, zamieszkanym przez ponad 150 grup etnicznych, w 2001 roku miasto otrzymało nadany przez ONZ tytuł: World's Most Multicultural City. Język angielski jest językiem ojczystym dla mniej niż 52% mieszkańców Toronto. Ponad 50% obecnych mieszkańców Toronto jest imigrantami, co daje miastu drugie miejsce na świecie co do ich liczby po Miami. Polonia w zespole miejskim Toronto, według badań Kanadyjskiego Urzędu Statystycznego, liczy 166 700 osób. Nieoficjalnie ocenia się, że ta liczba jest ponad dwukrotnie większa. Wg. oficjalnych statystyk 79 875 torontończyków mówi po polsku.
