Tonnage

Tonnage is a measure of the size or cargo capacity of a ship. The term derives from the taxation paid on tuns of wine, and was later used in reference to the weight of a ship's cargo; however, in modern maritime usage, "tonnage" specifically refers to a calculation of the volume or cargo volume of a ship. The term is still sometimes incorrectly used to refer to the weight of a loaded or empty vessel.

Le tonnage est la mesure du volume d'un bateau (une image de la capacité de transport d'un navire de commerce). Il représente le volume intérieur, exprimé en tonneaux (le tonneau est équivalent à 2,83 m³) pour les petits bateaux et, en unités UMS (Universal Measurement System) pour les navires de longueur supérieure à 24 m effectuant des voyages internationaux. Sur les documents officiels, on porte Jauge brute : 7800 ou Jauge nette : 6600, sans pouvoir y porter une unité puisqu'elle n'est pas expressement nommée.

Die Bruttoregistertonne (BRT) ist ein (seit 1969 in Deutschland, in Österreich später) veraltetes Raummaß für die Größe von Handelsschiffen. 1 BRT = 100 Kubikfuß = 2,83164 m³ Obwohl das Wort Tonne darin steckt, ist die Bruttoregistertonne nicht gleichzusetzen mit Massenangaben wie der Ladefähigkeit. Sie darf auch nicht mit dem Maß für Verdrängung, der Standard-Tonne, verwechselt werden.

Tonaż – nośność lub pojemność statku handlowego, grupy statków lub floty wyrażona w tonach. W przypadku okrętów wojennych tonaż jest określany pojęciem wyporności. Tonaż nie jest pojęciem ściśle określonym i z tego względu operowanie tym pojęciem wymaga bardziej szczegółowego określenia jakiego rodzaju wielkości ma dotyczyć.
