Lightness (sometimes called value or tone) is a property of a color, or a dimension of a color space, that is defined in a way to reflect the subjective brightness perception of a color for humans along a lightness–darkness axis. A color's lightness also corresponds to its amplitude.

In music, timbre, also known as tone color, ( or ; ) is the quality of a musical note or sound or tone that distinguishes different types of sound production, such as voices and musical instruments, string instruments, wind instruments, and percussion instruments. The physical characteristics of sound that determine the perception of timbre include spectrum and envelope. In psychoacoustics, timbre is also called tone quality and tone color.

Die Klangfarbe (auch das Timbre) ist in der Musik einer der Parameter des einzelnen Tons und wird bestimmt durch sein Schallspektrum, also das spezifische Gemisch aus Grundton, Obertönen, Rauschanteilen usw., sowie den zeitlichen Verlauf des Frequenzspektrums und der Lautstärke.

Klangfärg, även timbre, är den specifika karaktären hos en ton, ett musikinstrument, eller en människoröst som utgörs av sammansättningen av de olika medklingande övertonerna. Klangfärgen påverkas framförallt av antalet, styrkan och frekvensen av de övertoner som tillsammans med grundtonen bildar klangen, men även av till exempel tonansatsen och formanterna. Ju högre och starkare deltoner, desto skarpare klangfärg.

Barwa dźwięku – subiektywna cecha dźwięku, która pozwala odróżnić brzmienia różnych instrumentów lub głosu. Uzależniona jest od ilości, rodzaju i natężenia tonów składowych. Barwa zmienia się m.in. wraz z wysokością dźwięku. Różnica w barwie dwóch dźwięków o tej samej wysokości opiera się na różnicy w ich spektrum harmonicznym.
