His first international goal came in the away win against Wales in June 99. His strikes included the winner in Denmark’s shock 3-2 success over Italy in Naples and he scored three goals in Denmark’s 8-0 aggregate mauling of Israel in the play-offs. He has excellent close control and dribbling skills, and can play on either wing. For the national side he is most effective when he tucks in behind central striker Ebbe Sand, although he has recently moved back to play in midfield. After an unhappy year with Newcastle FC in England where he arrived in a £2.5 million deal from SC Heerenveen, Tomasson has revived his fortunes with Feyenoord. He collected a Dutch championship medal with the Rotterdam club in 1999 and made an impression in the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League, not least with his two goals against SS Lazio in Rome which secured an unlikely win for his team.
