Tom Gehrels

Tom Gehrels (born Feb 21 1925, Haarlem) is a Dutch-American astronomer.He helped to set up the Spacewatch program for finding near-Earth asteroids. He has discovered a number of comets, including periodic comets 64P/Swift-Gehrels, 78P/Gehrels, 82P/Gehrels, and 90P/Gehrels. He has also discovered over 3000 asteroids, including the Apollo asteroids 1864 Daedalus and 5011 Ptah, and the Amor asteroid 4587 Rees, as well as dozens of Trojan asteroids. He was principal investigator for the Imaging Photopolarimeter experiment on the Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 probes to Jupiter and Saturn.

Tom Gehrels (* 21. Tom Gehrels (ur. 22 lutego 1925 w Haarlem), holenderski astronom.Odkrył 17 planetoid samodzielnie oraz pracując wraz z Cornelisem van Houtenem i jego żoną Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld odkrył 4164 planetoidy. W 2007 roku sklasyfikowany na 5. miejscu wśród odkrywców największej liczby asteroid. Był jednym z założycieli programu Spacewatch. W uznaniu jego zasług jedną z planetoid nazwano 1777 Gehrels.
