Toluene, formerly known as toluol, is a clear, water-insoluble liquid with the typical smell of paint thinners. It is a mono-substituted benzene derivative, i.e., one in which a single hydrogen atom from six groups of atoms from the benzene molecule has been replaced by a univalent group, in this case CH₃.

Toluol, Trivialname nach IUPAC auch Toluen, Methylbenzol, Phenylmethan, nach IUPAC-Nomenklatur Methylbenzen genannt, ist eine farblose, charakteristisch riechende, flüchtige Flüssigkeit, die in vielen ihrer Eigenschaften dem Benzol ähnelt. Toluol ist ein aromatischer Kohlenwasserstoff, häufig ersetzt es als Lösungsmittel das giftige Benzol. Es ist unter anderem auch im Benzin enthalten.

Le toluène, également appelé méthylbenzène ou phénylméthane est un hydrocarbure aromatique sous la forme d'un liquide transparent, très répandu et utilisé comme produit de départ industriel ou comme solvant. Il dissout un grand nombre d'huiles, graisses, résines (naturelles ou de synthèse). Il a une odeur caractéristique (type dissolvant pour peinture) rappelant celle, douceâtre, du benzène apparenté.

Toluen eller metylbensen är i ren form en färglös vätska som luktar typiskt petroleum. Toluen kallades tidigare toluol. Det framställs genom upprepade extraktioner eller destillationer ur stenkolstjära och numera mest ur lätta petroleumfraktioner. Toluen finns i råolja men bildas också vid till exempel reformering av kolväten i oljeraffinaderier. Det är ett aromatiskt kolväte.
