Titans

Titan (tye'-tən, ) or Saturn VI is the largest moon of Saturn, the only moon known to have a dense atmosphere, and the only object other than Earth for which clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid has been found. Titan is the twentieth-most distant moon of Saturn and sixth-farthest among those large enough to assume a spheroid shape. Frequently described as a satellite with planet-like characteristics, Titan's diameter is roughly 50% larger than Earth's moon and it is 80% more massive. It is the second-largest moon in the Solar System, after Jupiter's moon Ganymede, and it is larger by diameter than the smallest planet, Mercury (although only half as massive). Titan was the first known moon of Saturn, discovered in 1655 by the Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens.

In Greek mythology, the Titans (Greek: Titan; plural: Titanes) were a race of powerful deities that ruled during the legendary Golden Age. There were twelve Titans from their first literary appearance, in Hesiod, Theogony; pseudo-Apollodorus, in Bibliotheke, adds a thirteenth Titan Dione, a double of Theia (a.k.a. Medusa). The six male Titans are known as the Titanes, and the female as the Titanides ("Titanesses"). The Titans were associated with various primal concepts, some of which are simply extrapolated from their names: ocean and fruitful earth, sun and moon, memory and natural law. The twelve first-generation Titans were led by the youngest, Cronus, who overthrew their father, Uranus ('Heaven'), at the urgings of their mother, Gaia ('Earth').

Titan est le plus grand satellite de Saturne. Avec un diamètre supérieur à celui de Mercure, proche de celui de Mars, Titan est le deuxième plus grand satellite du système solaire, après Ganymède. Il s'agit du seul satellite à posséder une atmosphère dense.

Ein Titan (altgriechisch: Τιτάν, Mehrzahl: Τιτάνες) ist in der griechischen Mythologie ein Nachkomme der Gaia (Mutter Erde) und des Uranos (der Himmel), von denen die Titanen, sechs Töchter und sechs Söhne, abstammen. Ihre Geschwister sind die Kyklopen (Zyklopen).

Titanes; forma żeńska Tytanida) – w  greckiej mitologii bogowie istniejący przed bogami olimpijskimi; dzieci Gai i Uranosa.Przerażony nimi Uranos zamierza, tak jak uczynił to ze Sturękimi i Cyklopami, wtrącić ich w czeluści Tartaru. Gaja przeciwstawia się zamiarom Uranosa, robi sierp i daje go Kronosowi, by użył przeciwko ojcu. Kronos odcina Uranosowi części rodne i wyrzuca je do morza. Z ociekających kropli krwi, które wpadły do wód, zrodziły się Erynie i Giganci. Kronos zasiadł na opuszczonym tronie, poślubiając swoją siostrę, Reę. Obawiając się detronizacji połykał kolejno swoje potomstwo, Hestię, Demeter, Herę, Hadesa i Posejdona. Dopiero Zeus podstępem sprawił, że Kronos wypluł jego rodzeństwo, które wystąpiło przeciwko Kronosowi i Tytanom, kryjącym się w górach Otrys. Tytani zostali pokonani dzięki pomocy wyzwolonych Cyklopów i Sturękich i wtrąceni na zawsze do Tartaru.

Tytan - największy księżyc Saturna. Nazwa księżyca pochodzi z mitologii greckiej. Tytani byli dwunastoma synami i córkami Nieba i Ziemi (Uranosa i Gai), którzy zbuntowali się przeciwko swoim rodzicom. Tytan został odkryty w 1655 roku przez C. Huygensa, jako pierwszy naturalny satelita Saturna.

I Titani (dal greco Τιτάν, signore plurale Τιτάνες) e le Titanesse sono figure della mitologia greca, padroni della settimana di sette giorni. Erano giganti talmente forti che ancora oggi si usa dire uno sforzo o una forza titanico per indicare una forza veramente grande. Furono creati da Eurinome, la dea di tutte le cose, ma secondo altre versione furono figli di Urano dio del cielo e la Madre Terra: Urano generò i Titani dopo aver cacciato i Ciclopi, suoi figli ribelli, nel remoto Tartaro. Per vendicarsi Gea indusse i Titani ad assalire il loro padre.
