Tiglath-Pileser III

Tiglath-Pileser III (Akkadian: Tukultī-Apil-Ešarra) was a prominent king of Assyria in the 8th century BC (ruled 745–727 BC) and is widely regarded as the founder of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. He is considered to be one of the most successful military commanders in world history, conquering most of the world known to the ancient Assyrians before his death.

Tiglat-Pileser III., auch Tiglatpilesar III. (beides biblische Schreibweisen, akkadisch "Tukulti-apil-Ešarra", mein Vertrauen ruht auf dem Sohne Ešarras) war von 745 v. Chr. bis 727 v. Chr. König von Assyrien.Es ist nicht klar, ob Tiglat-Pileser ein Usurpator oder ein legitimer Thronfolger war. Er selbst (KAH I, 21) beschreibt sich als Sohn von Adad-nirari III. , der allerdings 38 Jahre vor ihm regierte. Die Königslisten führen ihn als Sohn von Assur-nirari V., seinem Vorgänger, das ist allerdings das übliche Verfahren und nicht immer korrekt.

Obalił Aszurnirariego V w 746 p.n.e..Nieznanego pochodzenia, w jednej ze swoich inskrypcji nazywa się jednak synem Salmanasara IV.Wprowadził wiele reform. Między innymi zreorganizował administrację podbitych prowincji, gdzie mianował namiestników zwanych bêl pihâti lub šaknu. Podzielił prowincje na obwody qannu. Powołał też armię zawodową - pułk królewski, obok armii podstawowej. W jego skład wchodzili głównie najemnicy z prowincji peryferyjnych. Za czasów jego rządów konnica w znacznym stopniu wyparła wozy bojowe.

Il nome, che letteralmente significa "la mia fiducia nel figlio di Escharra", viene trascritto anche in altri modi (per esempio Tiglath Pileser o Tiglatpileser), e compare in un certo numero di varianti nelle fonti antiche (in 2 Cronache 28:20, per esempio, si trova Tillegath-Pilneser). Diverse fonti, fra cui ancora la Bibbia (1 Cronache 5:26 e 2 Re 15:19,20) ricordano Tiglat-Pileser III anche come Pul o Pulu.
