Tibet (; , ; ) is a plateau region in Asia, north-east of the Himalayas. It is the traditional homeland of the Tibetan people as well as some other ethnic groups such as Monpas, Qiang, and Lhobas, and is now also inhabited by considerable numbers of Han and Hui people. Le Tibet est l'aire asiatique habitée par le peuple des Tibétains. Cette zone linguistique tibétaine ainsi que « le grand Tibet historique » revendiqué par le gouvernement tibétain en exil sont composés de trois régions : le Ü-Tsang (dont la plus grande partie du territoire est aujourd'hui comprise dans la Région autonome du Tibet), l'Amdo (correspondant aujourd'hui globalement aux provinces chinoises du Qinghai et du Gansu) et le Kham (dont le territoire est partagé entre les provinces du Sichuan et du Yunnan et la Région autonome du Tibet). Le nombre de Tibétains dans l'ensemble de ces régions est de , selon le bureau des statistiques de Chine. Le gouvernement tibétain en exil à Dharamsala (Inde) donne une estimation proche de ce chiffre de 6 millions de Tibétains vivant actuellement au Tibet. Il faut ajouter qu'environ Tibétains ont fui le Tibet et vivent actuellement en exil, principalement en Inde.

Tibet, eller formellt Autonoma regionen Tibet är en autonom region i Folkrepubliken Kina som grundades 1965. Tibets gamla statsledning, ledd av Dalai Lama, befinner sig numera i exil i Dharamsala i norra Indien. Kinas regering bestrider att Tibet var en suverän stat före år 1950.

Tybet (tybetański: Bod []) - region w Azji Środkowej; dawniej niepodległe państwo, w 1949 roku anektowane przez Chiny (zobacz: Tybetański Region Autonomiczny). Przed okupacją składało się z trzech prowincji (Amdo, Kham, Ü-Cang (dBu-gTsang)) i miało powierzchnię około 2,5 mln km². Tybet położony jest na średniej wysokości około 4000-5000 metrów nad poziomem morza. Od południa i zachodu jest ograniczony przez Himalaje, Karakorum oraz masyw Pamiru, od północy przez Kunlun, Ałtyn-tag oraz Nanszan. Rozciągłość równoleżnikowa Tybetu wynosi około 2500 km. Na jego terenie biorą początek takie wielkie rzeki jak Jangcy, Brahmaputra, Indus, Mekong oraz mniejsze - Saluin, Satledź, Kali Gandaki, Trisuli, Manas, Subansuri.
