See Chest for the human anatomy article.The thorax is a division of an animal's body that lies between the head and the abdomen.In mammals, the thorax is the region of the body formed by the sternum, the thoracic vertebrae and the ribs. It extends from the neck to the diaphragm, not including the upper limbs. The heart and the lungs reside in the thoracic cavity, as well as many blood vessels. The inner organs are protected by the rib cage and the sternum.

Als Thorax (v. griech. θοράξ) wird in der Medizin/Anatomie der Brustkorb bezeichnet. Die Wand des Thorax wird von Brustwirbelsäule, Brustbein und Rippen (knöcherner Thorax) sowie von Muskulatur gebildet. Er umschließt die Brusthöhle (Cavum thoracis) und, aufgrund der Kuppelform des Zwerchfells, auch den oberen (bei Tieren vorderen) Teil der Bauchhöhle. Die am Thorax außen und innen ansetzende Atemmuskulatur ermöglicht die Atmung bei landlebenden Wirbeltieren.

Il Thorax (torace) è la parte centrale del corpo di un trilobite. È suddiviso longitudinalmente in una parte centrale, detta lobo assiale, affiancata da due pleure. Trasversalmente si suddivide in segmenti il cui numero è variabile a seconda della specie e dell'età dell'esemplare.

Het borststuk (de thorax) van een insect bestaat uit drie segmenten en is geheel gewijd aan de voortbeweging. Aan ieder segment zit links en rechts een poot; aan de laatste twee segmenten zit bij gevleugelde insecten links en rechts een vleugel. Vliegen en muggen (diptera) hebben maar 1 paar vleugels aan het 2e segment; het tweede paar is gemodificeerd tot halters (halteres) en heeft een functie bij het evenwicht en de vluchtstabilisatie. Er zijn fossiele insecten gevonden die aan alle drie de thoracale segmenten een paar vleugels leken te hebben; bij moderne insecten komt dit niet meer voor. Om de voortbewegingsorganen te bedienen is de thorax verder meestal nagenoeg gevuld met spieren.
