Thomas Gray

Thomas Gray (December 26, 1716 –  July 30, 1771), was an English poet, classical scholar and professor of Cambridge University. He was born in Cornhill, London, the son of an exchange broker and a milliner. He was the fifth of eight children and the only child in his family to survive infancy. He lived with his mother after she left his abusive father. He was educated at Eton College where his uncle was one of the masters. He recalled his schooldays as a time of great happiness, as is evident in his Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College. Gray was a delicate and naturally scholarly boy who spent his time reading great literature and avoiding athletics. Probably fortunately for himself, he was able to live in his uncle’s household rather than in college. He made three close friends: Horace Walpole, son of Prime Minister Robert Walpole, Thomas Ashton and Richard West. The four of them prided themselves on their sense of style, their sense of humour and their appreciation of beauty.

Juli 1771 in Cambridge) war ein englischer Dichter, Gelehrter und Briefe-Schreiber.Thomas Gray wurde in London geboren und lebte mit seiner Mutter, nachdem diese ihren gewalttätigen Ehemann, einen Geschäftsmann, verlassen hatte. Gray wurde in Eton erzogen und immatrikulierte sich als Student am Peterhouse, Cambridge. Später wechselte er ans Pembroke College, Cambridge. Als Schüler lernte er Horace Walpole kennen, den er in den Jahren 1739 bis 1741 auf dessen Grand Tour durch Mitteleuropa begleitete.

Thomas Gray (ur. 26 grudnia 1716 w Londynie, zm. 30 lipca 1771 w Cambridge) – poeta angielski doby neoklasycyzmu, filolog angielski, profesor historii na Cambridge University.Urodził się w Londynie. Edukację zdobył w Eton College, a następnie Peterhouse i Pembroke College w Cambridge. Zaproponowano mu także stanowisko poety nadwornego na dworze królewskim w Londynie, którego jednak nie przyjął. Był jednym z najmniej płodnych poetów angielskich; podczas jego życia opublikowano utwory zajmujące łącznie mniej niż 1000 wersów, jednak uznawany jest obok Williama Collinsa za najlepszego poetę XVIII w. Jego wiersze są filozoficzne, nastrojowe i melancholijne. Pod koniec życia odbył podróż do Szkocji, co spowodowało fascynację kulturą ludową, widoczną w ostatnich utworach poety.

Biografia Thomas Gray nacque a Londra, e visse con la madre dopo che questa lasciò il violento marito. Studiò all'Eton College, e diventò studente prima a Peterhouse e successivamente al Pembroke College di Cambridge. Durante i suoi studi fece la conoscenza di Horace Walpole, che accompagnò durante il suo viaggio formativo in Europa. Tale viaggio era una consuetudine per i figli di famiglie benestanti per completare la loro educazione.
