Thespis of Icaria (present-day Dionysos, Greece) (6th century BC), according to certain Ancient Greek sources and especially Aristotle, was the first person ever to appear on stage as an actor playing a character in a play (instead of speaking as him or herself). In other sources, he is said to have introduced the first principal actor in addition to the chorus.

Thespis, som levde under 500-talet f.Kr., hävdas vara den första person som uppträdde på scen som skådespelare i en teaterpjäs, fastän verkligheten troligen är mer komplicerad. I andra källor sägs han ha infört den första skådespelaren förutom kören i den grekiska teatern.

Tespis (grc. ( - Thespis; VI w. p.n.e.) – grecki poeta i aktor, twórca tragedii - aktora (odpowiadacza), dialog z chórem dramatu jako gatunku literackiego. Wprowadził pierwszego aktora rozwijającego dialog z chórem i przewodnikiem chóru, co stanowiło zaczątek dramatu jako rodzaju literackiego. Wystawiał swoje dramaty na wozie, jeżdżąc po wsiach, stąd określenie "wóz Tespisa", oznaczające teatr objazdowy. Nie zachowały się autentyczne fragmenty jego dzieł.
