It was released in February, 1966, and hit #1 in the United States and United Kingdom Pop charts. Subsequently, many cover versions of the song have been released in a range of styles: pop, rock, country, dance, and industrial (see selected list below). Jessica Simpson made #14 in the United States in 2005 with her version based on the movie: The Dukes of Hazzard. Geri Halliwell and Jewel also released remakes of the song.
