See also The American Spectator magazine. The Spectator is a British magazine founded in 1828 and published weekly. It is currently owned by the Barclay brothers, who also own The Daily Telegraph. Its principal subject area is politics, about which it generally takes a robustly conservative editorial line, although regular contributors such as Rod Liddle write from the Left. The magazine also has extensive arts pages on books, music, opera, and film and TV reviews.

The Spectator - pismo założone w 1711 roku w Wielkiej Brytanii. Głównymi pomysłodawczami i autorami piszącymi doń artykuły byli Richard Steele i Joseph Addison . Pismo przedstawiało wigowski pogląd na świat. Od momentu wydania pierwszego numeru datuje się często brytyjskie oświecenie jako całość. Irlandczyk Steele i Anglik Addison podejmowali głównie tematykę społeczną i czasem naukową. The Spectator wydawano do 1714 roku. Zgromadzone później numery w jeden gruby tom były po 1714 roku dostępne w kawiarniach-czytelniach, jakich wówczas pełno było w Londynie i w bibliotekach.

The Spectator è il nome di un quotidiano inglese uscito dal Marzo 1711 al Dicembre 1712. Fu fondato dal politico, scrittore e drammaturgo Joseph Addison, che in precedenza aveva collaborato con Richard Steele alla pubblicazione tri-settimanale The Tatler.Lo Spectator è considerato come uno dei primi esempi di giornalismo moderno; incentrando la linea editoriale più sull'analisi di questioni sociali che sulle dispute politiche, il giornale inglese riuscì a conquistare molti lettori, raggiungendo una tiratura di oltre 10.000 copie, un record per l'epoca. Secondo le stime di Addison il giornale veniva però letto da circa 60.000 persone, ossia circa un decimo della popolazione della Londra di inizio '700. Ogni numero è ambientato in un club, pretesto utilizzato per porre a confronto le diverse categorie sociali che nei club normalmente si incontrano: avvocati, commercianti, militari, letterati, riservando al giornalista il ruolo imparziale di spettatore (spectator, per l'appunto).

The Spectator was de naam van een Engels tijdschrift dat werd opgericht door Joseph Addison en Richard Steele.Van 1 maart 1711 tot 6 december 1712 verschenen 555 nummers. In 1714 blies Addison het blad nieuw leven in, en er verschenen nog 80 afleveringen. The Spectator was verwant aan het door Steele opgerichte blad The Tatler (1709-1711) waaraan Addison ook meewerkte.The Spectator werd voornamelijk gevuld door de vrienden Addison en Steele, maar er waren ook bijdragen van anderen, onder wie Alexander Pope. Het blad werd uitgegeven als het werk van een kleine club van representatieve heren uit verschillende sociale klassen.
