The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel (or 'heroic romance') written by the English academic J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier work, The Hobbit, but developed into a much larger story. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, with much of it being created during World War II. Although intended as a single-volume work, it was originally published in three volumes in 1954 and 1955 due to the high cost of paper as a result of the war, and it is in this three-volume form that it is popularly known. It has since been reprinted numerous times and translated into many different languages, becoming one of the most popular works in 20th-century literature.

Władca Pierścieni (tytuł oryginału: The Lord of the Rings) to powieść fantasy J.R.R. Tolkiena, dziejąca się w jego fikcyjnym świecie zwanym Śródziemiem.Jest ona kontynuacją innej opowieści tego autora zatytułowanej Hobbit, czyli tam i z powrotem. Władca Pierścieni jest często nazywany trylogią, choć naprawdę jest to powieściowa całość, podzielona na sześć ksiąg. Ze względu na swoją dużą objętość została wydana w trzech tomach z powodu nacisków wydawcy, nie było to jednak oryginalne zamierzenie Tolkiena. Il Signore degli Anelli (titolo originale in inglese: The Lord of the Rings) è un romanzo epico fantasy scritto da John Ronald Reuel Tolkien e ambientato alla fine della Terza Era, nell'immaginaria Terra di Mezzo.Scritto a più riprese tra il 1937 e il 1949, fu pubblicato in tre volumi tra il 1954 e il 1955. Tradotto in almeno 38 lingue, con decine di riedizioni ciascuna, resta una delle più popolari opere letterarie del XX secolo.La narrazione riprende dove si era interrotto un precedente romanzo dello scrittore inglese, Lo Hobbit, ma la storia di «Frodo dalle nove dita e l'Anello del Fato» narrata nel cosiddetto Libro Rosso dei Confini Occidentali si inserisce ora in un'ambientazione di più ampio respiro, attingendo pienamente al vasto corpus storico, mitologico, linguistico creato ed elaborato dall'autore nel corso di tutta la sua vita.
