The Football League

The Football League is a league competition featuring professional football clubs from England and Wales, and is the oldest such competition in world football. Its 72 clubs are evenly divided into three divisions, The Championship, League One, and League Two. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the League and is further extended to allow the top Championship clubs to exchange places with the lowest placed clubs in the Premier League, and the bottom clubs of League Two to switch with the top clubs of the Football Conference, thus integrating the League into the English football league system. Although primarily a competition for English clubs, three clubs from Wales also take part.

Der Profi-Fußball in England ist in vier Divisionen gegliedert. Die höchste Spielklasse ist die selbstverwaltete FA Premier League. Die übrigen drei (League Championship, League 1, League 2) stehen unter der Verwaltung der Football League.Am Ende jeder Saison steigen einige Teams in die jeweils tiefere Division ab und umgekehrt einige Mannschaften in die jeweilig höhere auf.Als weiterer Anreiz für die Mannschaften, die sicheren Positionen im Mittelfeld zu vermeiden, wurden Play-offs in den Divisionen 1-3 eingeführt, welche die vier Plätze hinter den sicheren Aufstiegsplätzen einbeziehen. Der Sieger der jeweiligen Play-offs steigt ebenfalls auf. 2003 wurde vorgeschlagen, die Play-offs auf sechs Mannschaften zu erweitern. Obwohl die meisten Mannschaften dem "im Prinzip" zustimmten, wurde die Änderung letztendlich abgelehnt.

De Football League is een organisatie die 72 professionele voetbalclubs uit Engeland en Wales representeert. Het is de organisatie achter de oudste professionele voetbalcompetitie op de wereld en organiseert daarnaast ook nog twee bekercompetities.De Football League werd opgericht op 22 maart 1888, toen de toenmalige directeur van Aston Villa, de Schot William McGregor orde in de chaos wilde scheppen en de 12 belangrijkste teams aanschreef om mee te doen. Naast Aston Villa waren dat Accrington, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion en Wolverhampton Wanderers. 8 september van dat jaar begon de eerste competitie.
