The Aeneid (IPA English pronunciation: ; in Latin Aeneis, pronounced — the title is  Greek in form: genitive case Aeneidos) is a Latin epic written by Virgil in the 1st century BC (between 29 and 19 BC) that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. It is written in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas' wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half treats the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed.

L’Énéide (en latin Aeneis — mot de forme grecque, génitif : Aeneidos) est une épopée de Virgile, le plus prestigieux exemple de ce genre littéraire en langue latine, composée en hexamètres dactyliques. Au même titre que l’Iliade et l’Odyssée — dont l’Énéide s'inspire largement —, l’ouvrage a suscité l’admiration de générations de lettrés de l’Antiquité jusqu’à nos jours et fut une source d’inspiration récurrente pour les artistes et les poètes. L’Énéide est le récit des épreuves du Troyen Énée, ancêtre mythique du peuple romain, fils d’Anchise et de la déesse Vénus, depuis la prise de Troie, jusqu’à son installation dans le Latium. Le poème, écrit entre –29 et –19, contient environ vers et se divise en douze chants.

Die Aeneis (veraltet auch Äneide) ist das von Vergil auf der Grundlage früherer Überlieferungen gestaltete Epos von der Flucht des Aeneas aus dem brennenden Troja und seinen Irrfahrten, die ihn schließlich nach Latium führen, wo er zum Stammvater der Römer wird. Die Aeneis erzählt also einen der Gründungsmythen des römischen Reiches. Das Epos, an dem Vergil zwischen 29 v. Chr. und seinem Tod 19 v. Chr. arbeitete, besteht aus zwölf Büchern mit insgesamt etwa 10.000 hexametrischen Versen.

L'Eneide (in latino Aeneis) è il sommo poema epico della cultura latina scritto dal poeta e filosofo Virgilio nel I secolo a.C. (più precisamente tra il 29 a.C. e il 19 a.C.) che narra la leggendaria storia di Enea, un principe troiano fuggito dopo la caduta della città, che viaggiò fino all'Italia diventando il progenitore del popolo romano. Alla morte del poeta il poema, scritto in esametri dattilici e composto da dodici libri, restò incompiuto. Nel suo testamento il poeta aveva chiesto di farlo bruciare, nel caso non fosse riuscito a completarlo, ma Ottaviano decise di tenerlo lo stesso e pubblicarlo così com'era stato lasciato. I primi sei libri raccontano la storia del viaggio di Enea da Troia all'Italia, mentre la seconda parte del poema narra la guerra, alla fine dall'esito vittorioso, dei Troiani contro i Latini, sotto il cui nome in seguito Enea e i suoi seguaci finiranno per essere conosciuti.
