Texas

Texas (IPA: //) is a state located in the southern and  southwestern regions of the United States of America. With an area of and a population of 23,507,783 (based on a 2006 U.S. census bureau estimate) in 254 counties, the state is second-largest in both area (behind Alaska) and population (behind California). About half the state's population resides in either the Dallas–Fort Worth or Houston metropolitan areas. The state's name derives from , a word in the Caddoan language of the Hasinai, which means "friends" or "allies". Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade. In 1845, it joined the United States as the 28th state.

Le Texas est un État du Sud des États-Unis, le plus vaste du pays après l'Alaska  et le deuxième le plus peuplé derrière la Californie avec 23,9 millions d'habitants. Sa capitale est Austin alors que Houston est son agglomération la plus peuplée. Les Texans sont à près de 80 % des citadins et presque la moitié d'entre eux vit dans les agglomérations de Dallas-Fort Worth ou Houston. Le Texas est plus grand que la France métropolitaine et possède des paysages divers organisés selon un gradient est-ouest : ils évoluent des plaines du Sud profond aux déserts du Sud-Ouest américain. Les milieux naturels sont donc d'une grande variété : marécages littoraux, forêts subtropicales, prairies, zones semi-arides et arides, montagnes se succèdent sur plusieurs centaines de kilomètres d'est en ouest. Situé au nord du fleuve Rio Grande, le Texas a d'abord été une colonie espagnole avant de faire partie du Mexique. Après avoir connu une éphémère république indépendante, il fut rattaché aux États-Unis en 1845. État esclavagiste, le Texas participa aux côtés des Confédérés à la Guerre de Sécession. Aujourd'hui, il attire de nombreux immigrants latinos et fait partie des États conservateurs dominés par les Républicains. Son économie dynamique repose sur l'élevage, les hydrocarbures, les industries pétrochimiques et de haute technologie (aérospatiale, biotechnologies) soutenues par un réseau dense d'universités. La culture du Texas reflète des influences et des héritages multiples, amérindiens, afro-américains, anglo-saxons et hispaniques. L'identité de l'État repose sur un folklore vivant (rodéo, western, country), associé à l'image mythique du cow-boy.

Hintergrund des Beinamens: Texas ist der einzige US-Staat, der vor seiner Zugehörigkeit zur USA eine unabhängige Republik war. Texas hat von allen US-Bundesstaaten die zweitgrößte Fläche (nach Alaska) und die zweitgrößte Bevölkerung (nach Kalifornien). Kein Mitgliedsland der EU ist so groß wie Texas und der Staat ist sogar größer als die Ukraine, dem größten europäischen Land nach Russland. Il Texas è uno degli stati che compongono gli Stati Uniti d'America. Si trova nella parte meridionale del paese. La capitale è Austin, ma la città maggiore è Houston.Il Texas si dichiarò indipendente dal Messico nel 1836 e, per una decina d'anni, è stato una nazione indipendente, col nome di Repubblica del Texas. Entrò a far parte degli Stati Uniti nel 1845, come ventottesimo stato. Con un territorio di 695.622 km², è il secondo stato per superficie nell'Unione, dopo l'Alaska. Con circa 22 milioni di abitanti ed un PIL di 1100 miliardi di dollari, il Texas è al secondo posto anche per popolazione ed importanza economica, dopo la California.
