TELNET (TELecommunication NETwork) is a network protocol used on the Internet or local area network (LAN) connections. It was developed in 1969 beginning with RFC 15 and standardized as IETF STD 8, one of the first Internet standards.The term telnet also refers to software which implements the client part of the protocol. TELNET clients have been available on most Unix systems for many years and are available for virtually all platforms. Most network equipment and OSs with a TCP/IP stack support some kind of TELNET service server for their remote configuration (including ones based on Windows NT). Recently, Secure Shell has begun to dominate remote access for Unix-based machines.

Telnet (TErminal NETwork ou TELecommunication NETwork, ou encore TELetype NETwork) est un protocole réseau utilisé sur tout réseau supportant le protocole TCP/IP. Il appartient à la couche session du modèle OSI et à la couche application du modèle ARPA. Il est normalisé par l'IETF (RFC 854 et RFC 855). Selon, l'IETF, le but du protocole Telnet est de fournir un moyen de communication très généraliste, bi-directionnel et orienté octet.

Telnet (Telecommunication Network) ist der Name eines im Internet weit verbreiteten Netzwerkprotokolls. Das IETF-Dokument STD 8 (RFC 854 und RFC 855), in welchem es beschrieben wird, beginnt folgendermaßen: „Der Sinn des TELNET-Protokolls besteht darin, eine ziemlich allgemeine, bidirektionale, 8-bit-pro-Byte-orientierte Kommunikationsmöglichkeit zu bieten.“ Es wird üblicherweise dazu verwendet, Benutzern den Zugang zu Internetrechnern über die Kommandozeile (CLI) zu bieten. Aufgrund der fehlenden Verschlüsselung wird es kaum noch eingesetzt, verbreitet sind heutzutage SSH für Konsolensitzungen und RDP (im MS-Windowsbereich) oder (per SSL oder über ein VPN oder einen SSH-Tunnel) verschlüsseltes VNC (plattformübergreifend) für grafische Sitzungen.

Telnet to standard protokołu komunikacyjnego używanego w sieciach komputerowych do obsługi odległego terminala w architekturze klient-serwer.Telnet jest usługą (programem) pozwalającą na zdalne połączenie się komputera (terminala) z oddalonym od niego komputerem (serwerem) przy użyciu sieci, wykorzystując do tego celu protokół TCP-IP oraz standardowo przypisany port 23. Umożliwia on zatem ustanowienie użytkownikowi zdalnej sesji na serwerze tak jak gdyby siedział tuż przed nim.

I documenti IETF STD 8 (RFC 854 e RFC 855) dicono:L'obiettivo del protocollo TELNET è fornire un supporto per le comunicazioni sufficientemente generalizzato, bidirezionale ed orientato ai byte (otto bit).È solitamente utilizzato per fornire all'utente sessioni di login remoto di tipo linea di comando tra host su internet.Per estensione, telnet è anche il nome di un programma che un utente può usare per avviare una sessione telnet ad un host remoto; il programma telnet implementa la parte client del protocollo. I client telnet sono stati disponibili sulla maggior parte dei sistemi Unix per parecchi anni e sono disponibili per qualsiasi tipo di computer.
