Tel Dan

Tel Dan ("Mound of Dan" תל דן in Hebrew), also known as Tel el-Qadi (Mound of the Judge in Arabic, literal translation of the Hebrew name Tel Dan, "Dan" being "judge", or "judging one"), is an archaeological site in Israel in the upper Galilee next to the Golan Heights. The site is quite securely identified with the Biblical city of Dan, the northernmost city in the Kingdom of Israel, which the Book of Judges states was known as Laish prior to its conquest by the Tribe of Dan. Due to its location close to the border with Lebanon and at the far north of the territory which fell under the British Mandate of Palestine, Tel Dan has had a long and often bitterly contested modern history, most recently during the 1967 Six-Day War.

Tel Dan (hebr.: תל דן, arab. Tell el-Qadi bzw. Tell al Kadi) ist ein etwa 20 m hoher und 20 ha großer Siedlungshügel (Tell) des Stammes Dan am Fuße des Berges Hermon, etwa einen Kilometer nördlich des heutigen Kibbuz Dan am nördlichen Ende der israelisch besetzten Golanhöhen.Hier liegt auch die größte der drei Jordanquellen mit dem Quellfluss Dan. Nachdem 1966 Wasserplaner die Quelle ableiten wollten, siegten die Naturschützer und Tel Dan wurde ein Naturreservat.In der frühen kanaanitischen Zeit wurde hier die erste Stadt gebaut, die zwischen 2700 und 2400 v. Chr. besiedelt war. Es handelte sich um die Stadt Laish (auch Leshem ), die der Stamm Dan eroberte.

Tel Dan (Hebraisk: , «Dans høyde») er en høyde i øvre Galilea i det nordlige Israel. På stedet ble det i 1993 og 1994 funnet tre fragment av en kongelig stele, skrevet på arameisk. Stelen dateres til siste halvdel av 800-tallet f. Kristus. I stelens innskrift hevder en arameisk konge eller general at han har slått «Davids hus», dvs. kongen av Jerusalem og kongen av Israel i krig. Dette er den eldste omtale av David som finnes utenfor Bibelen, og den eldste omtale av Israel fra en utenombibelsk kilde i Levanten.

תל דן (ערבית تل القاضي - "תל אל-קאדי", "תל השופט") הוא תל הנמצא כחצי קילומטרת מצפון לקיבוץ דן, בתחומה של שמורת טבע תל דן. גובהו 204 מטרים מעל פני הים, שטחו כ-200 דונם וצורתו כשל אליפסה בקוטר של 400 עד 500 מטרים.
