Tanta

Tanta (Arabic: طنطا ) is an Egyptian town, with an estimated 33,000 inhabitants. Tanta is located 94 km (59 miles) north of Cairo and 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Alexandria. It is a cotton-ginning center and the main railroad hub of the Nile Delta. Three annual festivals are held in Tanta in honor of Ahmad al-Badawi, a Sufi figure of the 13th century. Tanta is also famous for its special sweets, eaten during the mulid (Arabic: المولد ) festivals.

Das Grab des Mystikers Ahmad al-Badawi, dem Gründer der Tariqa Badawiyya, des größten Sufi-Ordens in Ägypten, liegt in Tanta.

Tanta (ar. طنطا) miasto w północnym Egipcie, stolica muhafazy Al-Gharbijja, w delcie Nilu. Położone jest 94 km na północ od Kairu i 130 km na południowy wschód od Aleksandrii. Liczba mieszkańców : 443 tys. (2003). Ośrodek przemysłu tekstylnego, spożywczego i rafineryjnego, ważny węzeł komunikacyjny. Siedziba uniwersytetu Tanta. Najważniejszym zabytkiem jest meczet i mauzoleum Ahmada al-Badawi z XIII w., będące celem pielgrzymek muzułmanów.

Tanta, arabisch: طنطا, is de op vier na grootste stad van Egypte. Het is de hoofdstad van de provincie Gharbiyah en ligt in het noordoosten van Egypte. Het kent een bevolking van 380.000 (1992) mensen.De stad bevindt zich in de delta van de rivier de Nijl en is ook de grootste stad in de delta. Het is een belangrijke spoorwegverbinding en is gelegen aan een belangrijke weg die Caïro en Alexandrië verbindt.De industrieën in Tanta zijn: textiel, voedsel, tabaksproducten en olie. Sinds 1972 bestaat er in de stad de Tanta Universiteit. Ook bevindt zich er de moskee met het graf van sheik Ahmad al-badawi, een moslimheilige die tijdens de 11e eeuw leefde.
