Taiwan Strait

The Taiwan Strait or Formosa Strait is a 180km-wide strait between mainland China and the island of Taiwan. The strait is part of the South China Sea and connects to East China Sea to the northeast. The narrowest part is 131km wide.Fujian province on the mainland is to the west of the strait, while important islands like Quemoy, Amoy, Hainan Island, and the Matsu Islands are nearby. To the east are the west coast of Taiwan and the Pescadores. The island fishermen use the strait as a fishing resource.The Strait has been the theatre for several military confrontations between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China since the last days of the Chinese Civil War in 1949 when the Kuomintang (KMT) forces led by Chiang Kai-shek retreated across the Strait and relocated its government on its final stronghold of Taiwan.

Le détroit de Taïwan ou détroit de Formose est un détroit de cent quatre-vingts kilomètres de largeur situé entre la Chine continentale et l'île de Taïwan (ou Formose). Il a une largeur de cent trente kilomètres dans sa plus petite portion. Die Taiwan-Straße (älterer Name: Formosastraße) ist die 180 Kilometer breite Meerenge zwischen der chinesischen Provinz Fujian im Westen und der Insel Taiwan (früher Formosa) im Osten, die das Ostchinesische Meer im Norden und das Südchinesische Meer im Süden verbindet. Die Taiwan-Straße ist eine der am dichtesten befahrenen Wasserstraßen (Containerverkehr entlang der chinesischen Küste), auf der zusätzlich viele Fischerboote unterwegs sind.

O estreito de Taiwan é um estreito, pertencente ao Mar da China Meridional, localizado entre a ilha de Formosa e a China continental. Possui cerca de 180 km de largura média, sendo a largura mínima de 131 km. Este estreito foi palco de várias batalhas da guerra que se seguiu à secessão entre China e Taiwan, em 1949.
