TOTEM
Total Cross Section, Elastic Scattering and Diffraction Dissociation (TOTEM) is one of the six detector experiments being constructed at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland. It shares intersection point I5 with the Compact Muon Solenoid. The detector will be used to measure total cross section, elastic scattering and diffractive processes.

Totem
Das Wort Totem stammt aus der Algonkin-Sprache des südlichen Kanada und bedeutet "Verwandtschaft, Familienabzeichen oder auch persönlicher Schutzgeist". Totem bezeichnet etwas Ähnliches wie heute der Nachname, schließt aber eine animistische Vorstellungswelt und eine besondere Form der Verwandtschaftsbeziehung mit ein (siehe auch Totemismus). Er ist ein wesentliches Merkmal etlicher (aber nicht aller) alten Gesellschaften und wurde insbesondere durch einige Indianergruppen in Nordamerika und die Aborigines in Australien bekannt.

Totem
In antropologia, un totem è un'entità naturale o soprannaturale, che ha un significato simbolico particolare per una singola persona o clan o tribù, e al quale ci si sente legati per tutta la vita. Il termine deriva dalla parola ototeman, usata dai nativi americani Ojibway.Nei clan in cui il capostipite è divino o semidivino, tale entità è considerata il totem del clan.Per le persone, l'associazione con il proprio totem avviene in una cerimonia di iniziazione, che può avvenire appena dopo la nascita, oppure anche in età adulta.
