TIFF

Tagged Image File Format (abbreviated TIFF) is a container format for storing images, including photographs and line art. It is now under the ownership of Adobe. Originally created by the company Aldus for use with what was then called "desktop publishing," TIFF is a popular format for color and black and white images. The TIFF format is widely supported by image-manipulation applications, by publishing and page layout applications, by scanning, faxing, word processing, optical character recognition and other applications. Adobe Systems, which acquired Aldus, now holds the copyright to the TIFF specification. TIFF has not had a major update since 1992, though several Aldus/Adobe technical notes have been published with minor extensions to the format, and several specifications, including TIFF/EP, have been based on the TIFF 6.0 specification.

Das Tagged Image File Format (TIFF oder auch kurz TIF) ist ein Dateiformat zur Speicherung von Bilddaten. Das TIF-Format wurde ursprünglich von Aldus (1994 von Adobe übernommen) und Microsoft für gescannte Rastergrafiken für die Farbseparation entwickelt. TIFF-Dateien besitzen den MIME-Typ image/tiff oder seltener image/tif.

TIFF (ang. Tagged Image File Format) – jeden z najbardziej rozpowszechnionych i uniwersalnych formatów plików graficznych. Służy do zapisywania grafiki bitmapowej. Opracowany w 1986 r. przez grupę firm pod przewodnictwem Aldus Corporation do drukowania postscriptowego. W pracach nad nim uczestniczył też Microsoft i Hewlett-Packard. Pliki zapisane w tym formacie mają rozszerzenie ".tif" lub ".tiff". Format pozwala na zapisywanie obrazów stworzonych w trybie kreskowym, skali szarości oraz w wielu trybach koloru i wielu głębiach bitowych koloru. Przechowuje ścieżki i kanały alfa, profile koloru, komentarze tekstowe. TIFF umożliwia stosowanie kompresji bezstratnej typu LZW oraz CCITT Group 4. Używany jest obecnie w DTP jako jeden z podstawowych formatów w tej branży, grafice trójwymiarowej (pomocniczo), w obrazowaniu medycznym itd. Umożliwia także zapisywanie dokumentów wielostronicowych (zawierających wiele obrazów)

Il Tagged Image File Format detto anche TIFF è un formato immagine di tipo raster piuttosto diffuso sviluppato da Aldus. Le specifiche del formato erano di proprietà della Aldus, in seguito assorbita dalla Adobe. TIFF è un marchio registrato dalla Aldus, ora detenuto dalla Adobe (ma non registrato).Le specifiche del formato TIFF permettono una notevole flessibilità, questo di per sé è un vantaggio ma rende difficile scrivere un interprete pienamente conforme alle specifiche. Il TIFF è largamente utilizzato per lo scambio di immagini raster fra stampanti e scanner perché permette di specificare numerose indicazioni aggiuntive come le tabelle di gamut o informazioni sulla calibratura del colore.
