TEMPERATURE REGULATION

Thermoregulation is the ability of an organism to keep its body temperature within certain boundaries, even when temperature surrounding is very different. This process is one aspect of homeostasis: a dynamic state of stability between an animal's internal environment and its external environment (the study of such processes in zoology has been called ecophysiology or physiological ecology). If the body is unable to maintain a normal temperature and it increases significantly above normal, a condition known as hyperthermia occurs. The opposite condition, when body temperature decreases below normal levels, is known as hypothermia.

La thermorégulation est le mécanisme qui permet à un organisme de conserver une température constante. Elle est le résultat de production et de déperdition de chaleur. On distingue les organismes homéothermes des poïkilothermes. Les poïkilothermes sont des organismes dont la température interne n'est pas constante.

Unter Thermoregulation versteht man in der Biologie die mehr oder weniger große Unabhängigkeit der Betriebstemperatur eines Organismus von der Außenwelt. Es lassen sich Thermokonforme (poikilotherme = wechselwarme Tiere) und Thermoregulatoren (homoiotherme = gleichwarme Tiere) unterscheiden.Die Bezeichnung Warmblüter und Kaltblüter wird inzwischen in diesem Zusammenhang nicht mehr verwendet und nur noch in Bezug auf Pferderassen angewandt. Dies hat dann aber nichts mit thermoregulatorischen Unterschieden bei den verschiedenen Pferden zu tun, sondern bezieht sich auf deren Temperament.
