TATA box (Goldberg-Hogness box)

A short nucleotide sequence in the promoter 25 to 35 bp upstream to the transcription initiation (cap) site of eukaryotic genes to which RNA polymerase II binds. The consensus sequence is TATAA/TA. The TATA box binds the general transcription factor TFIID. (see also CAAT box).
