SNAFU is an acronym meaning, "things are in a mess – as usual." The most commonly accepted rendering is Situation Normal: All Fucked Up. In modern usage, this rendering is commonly used, as is a "snafu" referring to an otherwise normal situation that suddenly went . The acronym is believed to have originated in the US Army during World War II.

Heute wird es verwendet, um ein Phänomen in der Kommunikation zwischen Hierarchiestufen zu beschreiben. Von vergleichbarer Bedeutung im Deutschen ist jene Umkehrung der Lagebeschreibung „Die Lage ist ernst, aber nicht hoffnungslos“ zu der mit Galgenhumor gewürzten Verballhornung  „Die Lage ist hoffnungslos, aber nicht ernst.“

Betegnelsen bruges når "situationen er håbløs, ligesom det plejer".Fortolkningen går i dag som:Situation Normal, All Fucked Up Dog skal det nævnes, at ordet fuck først begyndte at blive et kendt og brugt ord i 1960'ernes USA , og derfor er det sansynligt, at den oprindelige betydning var "Situation Normal, All Fouled Up"
