, ; officially , is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, and the largest metropolitan area of the world. It is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. Tokyo is in the Kanto region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Die Stadt selbst ist allerdings keine eigene Verwaltungseinheit, statt dessen bilden ihre 23 Bezirke (jap. Nijusan-ku) zusammen mit dem westlich gelegenen Tama-Gebiet und den südlichen Izu- und Ogasawara-Inseln die Präfektur Tokio. Das Gebiet der 23 Bezirke ist mit 8.483.050 Einwohnern nicht nur die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt Japans, sondern als Sitz der Japanischen Regierung und des Tenno auch de facto die Hauptstadt Japans. Außerdem ist Tokio das Finanz-, Industrie-, Handels-, Bildungs- und Kulturzentrum Japans mit zahlreichen Universitäten, Hochschulen, Forschungsinstituten, Theatern und Museen. Mit den Flughäfen Narita und Haneda und als Ausgangspunkt der meisten Shinkansen-Linien ist es auch das Verkehrszentrum des Landes.

Tóquio (Tōkyō, 東京, em japonês; lit. capital do leste) é a capital e uma das 47 províncias do Japão. Situa-se em Honshu, a maior ilha do arquipélago. Tóquio possui 12 064 101 habitantes, cerca de 10% da população do país, e a sua área metropolitana possui mais de 31,2 milhões de habitantes, o que torna Tóquio a maior área urbana do mundo. Tóquio é famosa pela  Torre de Tóquio. Foi fundada em 1457, com o nome de Edo ou Yedo. Tornou-se a capital do império em 1868 com a actual designação. Sofreu grande destruição duas vezes; uma em 1923, quando foi atingida por um terremoto; e outra em 1944 e 1945, quando bombardeios americanos destruíram grande parte da cidade e mataram mais de 150 mil pessoas.
