Symptom

The term symptom (from the Greek  meaning 'chance', 'mishap' or 'casualty', itself derived from συμπιπτω meaning 'to fall upon' or 'to happen to') has two similar meanings in the context of physical and mental health:Strictly, a symptom is a sensation or change in health function experienced by a patient. Thus, symptoms may be loosely classified as strong, mild or weak. In this, medically correct, sense of the word, it is a subjective report, as opposed to a sign, which is objective evidence of the presence of a disease or disorder. Examples of symptoms are fatigue/tiredness, pain, or nausea. In contrast, elevated blood pressure, or abnormal appearance of the retina, would be a medical sign indicating the nature of the disease.A symptom may loosely be said to be a physical condition which indicates a particular illness or disorder (e.g. Longman, 1995). An example of a symptom in this sense of the word would be a rash. However, correctly speaking, this is known as a sign, as would any indication detectable by a person other than the sufferer without verbal information from the patient.

Ein Symptom (griechisch σύμπτωμα symptoma „Begleiterscheinung“ von syn „zusammen“, pípto „fallen“, dazu das Substantiv ptoma „Fall“ ) ist in der Medizin bzw. der Psychologie ein Zeichen, das auf eine Erkrankung oder Verletzung hinweist. Es kann durch einen Arzt bzw. Psychologen erfasst worden sein (Befund) oder auch vom Patienten selbst erfahren werden (Beschwerde). Die Gesamtheit der aus einem Krankheitsprozess resultierenden Symptome ergibt das klinische Bild, die Symptomatik. Symptome können in subjektive (durch den Betroffenen wahrnehmbare) und intersubjektive (von außen wahrnehmbare) Krankheitszeichen unterteilt werden. Letztere werden auch klinische Zeichen genannt.

Objaw – zjawisko poddające się ocenie lekarskiej oraz stanowiące podstawę do wnioskowania o czynnościach ustroju, jego narządów i tkanek zarówno w stanie zdrowia, jak i choroby. Objawy patologiczne występują w zaburzeniach czynności ustroju, wskazują na ich rodzaj i pomagają w ustaleniu rozpoznania. Objaw patognomoniczny to objaw występujący tylko i wyłącznie w jednej konkretnej chorobie i jego znalezienie u pacjenta jest równoznaczne z rozpoznaniem choroby.

Een symptoom is een kenmerk of klacht, behorend bij een bepaalde ziekte. Anders dan in het Engels, waar een symptom een klacht (beleving van de patiënt) is en een sign een objectief voor de arts waarneembaar teken van ziekte worden in het Nederlands met 'symptoom' beide soorten verschijnselen aangeduid. Er is wel voorgesteld voor 'sign' (objectief waarneembaar teken van ziekte) het Griekse woord semeion weer in te voeren maar gangbaar is dit niet.
