The Swiss Market Index (SMI) is Switzerland's blue-chip stock market index, which makes it the most important in the country. It is made up of twenty of the largest and most liquid SPI large- and mid-cap stocks. As a price index, the SMI is not adjusted for dividends, but a performance index that takes account of such distributions is available (the SMIC - SMI Cum Dividend).

Der Swiss Market Index (SMI) ist als Blue-Chip-Index der bedeutendste Aktienindex der Schweiz. Er bildet die 20 liquidesten und grössten Titel aus dem SPI Large- und Mid-Cap-Segment ab. Normiert wurde der SMI am 30. Juni 1988 auf 1500 Indexpunkte. In erster Linie steht er als nicht dividendenkorrigierter Index (Preis-Index) zur Verfügung, wird aber auch als Performance-Index unter der Bezeichnung SMIC (SMI Cum Dividend) publiziert. Die im SMI enthaltenen Titel entsprechen gegenwärtig rund 90 % der Marktkapitalisierung sowie 90 es Handelsvolumens aller an der SWX Swiss Exchange kotierten Schweizer und Liechtensteiner Beteiligungspapiere. Da der SMI als repräsentativ für den Schweizer Markt gilt, wird er als Basiswert für zahlreiche Finanzprodukte wie Optionen, Futures oder Indexfonds, etwa Exchange-traded fund, verwendet.
