The term was changed from Syrian to Syriac in referring to the (Syrian Christian) people and language so as to avoid confusion with belonging to the country of Syria. Les Araméens sont un peuple antique du Moyen-Orient dont l'héritage – en tout premier lieu la langue – se transmet à l'époque moderne au sein de communautés ethnico-religieuses du même nom. Les Araméens modernes s'identifient ou sont identifiés également comme Syriaques, Assyriens, Assyro-Chaldéens, ChaldoAssyriens ou Araméo-Assyro-Chaldéo-Syriaques. Depuis le début du siècle, des communautés araméennes se sont installées en Amérique, en Europe ou en Australie. Ils n'ont jamais eu un empire unifié, ils ont été divisés en petits royaumes indépendants dans tout le Proche-Orient. Pourtant, ils vont avoir le privilège d'imposer leur langue et leur culture à l'ensemble de ce Proche-Orient. Les Araméens ignorent l’écriture et nous ne les connaissons que par l’intermédiaire des peuples auxquels ils se sont heurtés, comme les Assyriens, qui les soumirent au VIII siècle av. J.-C.

Suryoyo (meervoud Suryoye) is de onvertaalde zelfaanduiding in het Aramees van het woord Syriër. Ook is de term synoniem met het woord Syrisch-orthodox. De benaming Syriër moet niet verward worden met de inwoners van de huidige staat Syrië. Dit zijn namelijk Arabieren. De Suryoye zijn de oorspronkelijke inwoners van Syrië en Tur Abdin.
