Sunderland

Sunderland (pronounced: , or ) is a city in Tyne and Wear, England. It was formerly a county borough but now forms part of the City of Sunderland. It sits at the mouth of the Wearside conurbation.The name "Sunderland" is reputed to come from Soender-land (soender/sunder being the Anglo-Saxon infinitive, meaning "to part"), likely to be reference to the valley carved by the River Wear that runs through the heart of the city. Another meaning is that of the name referring to 'land set aside', derived from the rich Christian heritage of the city.

Sunderland ist eine Hafenstadt im Metropolitan County Tyne and Wear in  Nordost-England. Bis 1974 war Sunderland ein County Borough der  traditionellen Grafschaft County Durham. Sunderland liegt an der Mündung des Flusses Wear in die Nordsee und hat 177.739 Einwohner (2001). Seit 1974 bildet Sunderland zusammen mit umliegenden Orten das gleichnamige Metropolitan Borough Sunderland. Im Jahr 1992 wurde Sunderland city status gegeben. Dies sollte Königin Elisabeth IIs vierzigstes Jahr als Königin feiern. Als Träger eines City-Status bezeichnet sich das Metropolitan Borough als City of Sunderland.

Sunderland è una città e un porto dell'Inghilterra nord-orientale, situata nella contea metropolitana di Tyne and Wear. Appartiene al borough metropolitano della City of Sunderland insieme ai sobborghi di Washington, Hetton-le-Hole e Houghton-le-Spring. La popolazione nel 2001 era di 177.739 abitanti, 282.700 contando l'intera area metropolitana. Sunderland ottenne lo Status di city nel 1992 in occasione del quarantesimo anno di regno della regina Elisabetta II.
