The Succession to Muhammad. The Succession to Muhammad concerns the different viewpoints and beliefs that are held in relation to the
succession to the leadership of the
Muslim community after the death of
Muhammad. Muhammad died in 632 CE. in
Medina following a brief illness. After an initial period of confusion, command of the Muslim community passed to
Abu Bakr, Muhammad's father-in-law and one of the Muslim leaders. In later centuries there was sharp disagreement as to how this transition came about and whether or not it was legitimate.
