In economics, a subsidy is a type of financial government assistance, such as a grant, tax break, or trade barrier, in order to encourage the production or purchase of a good. The term subsidy may also refer to assistance granted by others, such as individuals or non-government institutions, although this is more commonly described as charity.

Une subvention est une aide financière, c’est-à-dire une somme d’argent, qui est allouée par une institution publique ou territoriale à une personne ou une organisation privée ou publique dans le cadre d'un projet. Les bénéficiaires des subventions peuvent être des associations à but non lucratif ou autre, des entreprises de droit privé ou de droit public, des exploitations agricoles ou encore des lieux de spectacles comme les théâtres et les cinémas indépendants, des collectivités locales, etc.

Subventionen (von lat. subvenire = zu Hilfe kommen) sind finanzielle Hilfen ohne unmittelbare Gegenleistung, die von staatlichen Institutionen an private Haushalte oder an private Unternehmen geleistet werden. Eine Politik, die in größerem Umfang mit Subventionen in den Markt eingreift, wird als Subventionismus bezeichnet, und die Verringerung von Subventionen als Subventionsabbau.

Subwencja (łac. subventio - zapomoga) - nieodpłatna i bezzwrotna pomoc finansowa udzielana najczęściej przez państwo podmiotom (np. jednostkom samorządu terytorialnego, prywatnym przedsiębiorstwom, organizacjom społecznym i osobom fizycznym) dla poparcia ich działalności.Wyróżnia się:subwencje ogólne - to pomoc finansowa udzielana przez państwo innym podmiotom na podstawie kryteriów obiektywnych np. liczby mieszkańcówsubwencje przedmiotowe - to bezzwrotna pomoc finansowa przeznaczana na realizację konkretnych zadań np. dopłata do kredytów dla rolników, dopłata do czynszów komunalnych itp. (tzn. na konkretny cel – celowość wydatkowania przyznawanych przez państwo środków) wyróżnia się:subwencje oświatową* otrzymywaną prze gminy, powiaty i województwa przyznawaną wg. zasad ustalonych przez MENsubwencje wyrównawczą* przyznawaną na rzecz gmin powiatów i województw których potencjał fiskalny stanowi w przypadku gmin mniej niż 92 % średniej krajowej, powiatów 85% średniej krajowej, województw mniej niż 110 %.

Subsidie (van Latijn subsidium: ondersteuning, hulp, bijstand) is een tijdelijke bijdrage van de overheid of een non-commerciële organisatie ten behoeve van het starten, dan wel een permanente bijdrage voor het uitvoeren van een activiteit waarvan het economische belang niet direct voor de hand ligt. Als het economisch belang van een te starten activiteit wel voor de hand ligt, spreekt men meestal van investeringspremie.
