Subscript and superscript
A subscript or superscript is a number, figure, symbol, or indicator that appears smaller than the normal line of type and is set slightly below or above it – subscripts appear at or below the baseline, while superscripts are above. Subscripts and superscripts are perhaps best known for their use in formulas, mathematical expressions, and descriptions of chemical compounds or isotopes, but have many other uses as well.

Hochstellung
Die Hochstellung ist ein graphisches Gestaltungsmittel im Schriftsatz, bei dem Buchstaben oder Zahlen gegenüber dem normalen Text hochgestellt werden. Genauer gesagt ist sie ein Schriftattribut, das einem Zeichen eine besondere Position (erhöht gegenüber der Grundlinie) und Größe (in der Regel verkleinert) gibt.

Exposant (typographie)
En typographie, on appelle exposant toute notation typographique supérieure de moindre corps placé à droite d'un autre caractère (symétrique de l'indice). Elle permet d'indiquer des notes de bas de page, des opérations exposant en mathématiques ou des masses atomiques en physique.

Exponentläge
Exponentläge är den position en siffra, variabel, symbol, tecken, bokstav, en mer avancerad räkneoperation eller, mindre ofta, ett ord kan inneha då det sätts i mindre storlek, närmare topplinjen på en textrad (i upphöjt läge). Nottecken för fot- och slutnoter skrivs i regel som siffror i exponentläge, liksom exponenter då potenser används i matematisk text:
753,5x = 0,77 (läs "75 upphöjt till 3,5x är lika med 0,77")

Верхний индекс или суперскри́пт — в типографике способ набора символов выше основной строки. Используется, в частности, при записи различных математических и химических формул.

В названиях органических полициклических соединений в соответсвии с номенклатурой IUPAC верхний индекс помещается после числа атомов в мостике для обозначения номеров атомов, связанных между собой этим мостиком (например: ).

В лингвистической литературе верхние индексы иногда используются для указания тона слога (напр., в пиньине ban3 то же что и bǎn, кит. 板 'доска') или различных оттенков качества звука (ph - p c придыханием).
