Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is the term used to describe the area of the African continent which lies south of the Sahara desert. Geographically, the demarcation line is the southern edge of the Sahara Desert.Since around 4,000 years before present, the north and sub-Saharan regions of Africa have been separated by the extremely harsh climate of the sparsely populated Sahara, forming an effective barrier interrupted by only the Nile River. The peoples south of the Sahara (excluding the Nile Valley) developed in relative isolation from the rest of the world. The modern term sub-Saharan corresponds with the standard representation of North as above and South as below. Tropical Africa and Equatorial Africa are alternative modern labels, used for the distinctive ecology of the region. However, if strictly applied, this term would exclude South Africa, most of which lies outside the Tropics.

Schwarzafrika ist eine europäisch geprägte Bezeichnung für den Teil des afrikanischen Kontinents, der sich südlich der Sahara befindet.Der Begriff hat seinen Ursprung unter anderem in der Hautfarbe der Bewohner dieser Region (die Schwarzafrikaner). Deshalb wird an seiner Stelle inzwischen der Begriff Subsahara-Afrika (bzw. Subsaharisches Afrika) verwendet.Die Sahara war für Europa in der Zeit des Kolonialismus eine Barriere, welche Afrika geographisch, ethnisch und kulturell deutlich unterteilte. Während Nordafrika mit dem Rest des Mittelmeerraumes in regem Austausch stand, war "Schwarzafrika" bis zur europäischen Kolonialisierung, trotz der sehr alten Transsahara-Handelsrouten, weitgehend isoliert. Die europäische Bezeichnung „Dunkler Kontinent“ für Afrika bezieht sich deshalb vor allem auf das Afrika südlich der Sahara und rührt nicht nur von der Hautfarbe der Einwohner her, sondern auch von dem mangelnden europäischen Wissen über das Landesinnere bis weit in die zweite Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Czarna Afryka (tez Afryka sub-Saharyjska) - nazwa stosowana dla określenia części Afryki na południe od Sahary, zamieszkanej w większości przez ludność czarnoskórą. Potocznie wyróżnia się Murzynów, Buszmenów, Hotentotów, Pigmejów. Ludność czarnoskóra Afryki w istocie dzieli się na negroidów właściwych (ludy Bantu i ludność Afryki Zachodniej) oraz nilotów (Etiopia, Somalia, a także takie plemiona jak Masaje). Czarna Afryka jest wciąż jednym z najbardziej zacofanych gospodarczo regionów świata. Wielu mieszkańców prowincji żyje jeszcze w prymitywnych tukulach - plemiennych wioskach. Ich tryb życia prawdopodobnie nie zmienił się od 30 000 lat. Plemiona te wyznają animizm.
