Styx (mythology)

In Greek mythology, "the River Styx" (Στυξ) is a river which formed the boundary between Earth and the Underworld, Hades. It circles Hades nine times. The rivers Styx, Phlegethon, Acheron and Cocytus all converge at the center of Hades on a great marsh. The other important rivers of Hades are Lethe and Eridanos. Styx is guarded by Phlegyas, who passes the souls from one side to another of the river. In other versions, Phlegyas guards Phlegethon, another of the main rivers of Hades. Sometimes the ferryman is called Charon.

Styx (griech. Στύξ – Fluss des Hasses) ist in der griechischen Mythologie neben Acheron, Lethe, Kokytos, Phlegethon und Eridanus ein Fluss der Unterwelt und eine Flussgöttin, Tochter des Okeanos und der Tethys (siehe Stammbaum der griechischen Götter). Im Griechischen ist die Styx weiblich, was für griechische Flussnamen selten ist. Im Deutschen sind beide Geschlechter – sowohl der als auch die Styx – geläufig.

Styx (gr. ) – w  mitologii greckiej główna rzeka w podziemnym świecie, przez którą miała przeprawić się każda zmarła dusza w drodze do krainy o nazwie Hades. Przez Styks przewoził Charon. Rzeka wypływała z Oceanu. Wpadały do niej wody rzeki Kokytos. Starożytni wyobrażali sobie Styx jako nimfę, córkę Hidana i Kakuzu. Miała ona być matką Zelosa, Nike, Bii i Kratosa. Przyszła jako pierwsza z pomocą Zeusowi wysyłając swoje dzieci przeciw Tytanom. W dowód wdzięczności Zeus pozwolił im na stałe zostać przy sobie, a Styks stała się bóstwem, na które składano najuroczystsze przysięgi.

Stige è una ninfa della mitologia greca, una delle tremila Oceanine, figlie del titano Oceano e della titanide Teti. Secondo le Metamorfosi di Ovidio era la più anziana delle Oceanine ed anche Esiodo la riconosce come "la più illustre" tra di esse; è l'unica che presiede ad un fiume, lo Stige infernale, del quale ha il compito di insozzare le acque.
