Strait of Gibraltar

The Strait of Gibraltar (Arabic: مضيق جبل طارق, Spanish: Estrecho de Gibraltar) is the strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Spain from Morocco. The name comes from Gibraltar, which in turn originates from the Arabic Jebel Tariq (جبل طارق) meaning mountain of Tariq. It refers to the Ummayad Berber general Tariq ibn-Ziyad who led the Islamic conquest of Hispania in 711. It is also known as the Straits of Gibraltar or STROG (Strait Of Gibraltar), the latter being in naval use. There are 8 miles (13 km) of ocean separating Europe from Africa at the strait's narrowest point. The strait depth ranges between 300 and 900 meters.You can take a ferry over the Strait of Gibraltar to get to Africa.

Le détroit de Gibraltar est situé au sud de l'Espagne, au nord du Maroc, à l'est de l'océan Atlantique, à l'ouest de la Méditerranée. C'est le seul passage maritime entre l'océan Atlantique et la Méditerranée. Il est large de 14,4 km et d'une profondeur d'environ 300 m. Dans l'Antiquité ce détroit était appelé « les colonnes d'Hercule », mais il doit son nom de Gibraltar à une déformation de djebel Tarik d'après le général Amazigh Tariq ibn Ziyad qui en avril 711 franchit le détroit pour faire un raid contre l'Espagne wisigothique, première incursion musulmane dans la péninsule Ibérique.

Die Straße von Gibraltar ist eine Meerenge, die das Mittelmeer mit dem Atlantik verbindet. Eingefasst wird sie im Norden von Spanien und der britischen Kronkolonie Gibraltar, im Süden von Marokko und der spanischen Exklave Ceuta. Sowohl Gibraltar wie auch Ceuta, in der Antike als „Säulen des Herakles“ bezeichnet, sind wichtige Hafenstädte. Die Straße von Gibraltar ist 14 bis 44 km breit und etwa 60 km lang. Sie erreicht eine Tiefe von 300 m bis 900 m unter dem  Meeresspiegel.

Cieśnina Gibraltarska (arab. جبل طارق, hiszp. Estrecho de Gibraltar) - cieśnina łącząca Morze Śródziemne z Oceanem Atlantyckim, oddzielająca Afrykę od Europy, pomiędzy dzisiejszym Marokiem i Ceutą (posiadłością hiszpańską) a Hiszpanią i Gibraltarem (posiadłością byrytyjską). Lo stretto di Gibilterra (Arabo: مضيق جبل طارق, Spagnolo: Estrecho de Gibraltar) è uno stretto che mette in comunicazione l'Oceano Atlantico e il Mar Mediterraneo. È delimitato a nord dall'estremità meridionale della penisola iberica e in particolare da Gibilterra e a sud dalla parte settentrionale del Marocco e in particolare dall'enclave spagnola di Ceuta.
