Stimulation

Stimulation is the action of various agents (stimuli) on muscles, nerves, or a sensory end organ, by which activity is evoked; especially, the nervous impulse produced by various agents on nerves, or a sensory end organ, by which the part connected with the nerve is thrown into a state of activity.The word is also often used metaphorically. For example, an interesting or fun activity can be described as "stimulating," regardless of its physical effects on nerves.It is also used in simulation technology to describe a synthetically-produced signal that triggers (stimulates) real equipment, see below.

Ein Reiz oder Stimulus (Mehrzahl: Stimuli) im Sinne der Neurobiologie kann beschrieben werden als eine überschwellige Depolarisation einer Zellmembran, die ein Aktionspotenzial auslöst, wobei die depolarisierende Einwirkung in der Regel von außen auf die Zelle einwirkt.Physikalische und chemische Gegebenheiten bezeichnet man als adäquate Reize, wenn sie an einem Rezeptor (z. B. in den Sinneszellen)  Erregungen als Reizantwort auslösen. Rezeptoren geben auf einen Reiz hin Signale, die (z. B. als Aktionspotenziale) transportiert werden können. Falls diese Signale Empfindungen in uns auslösen, indem sie uns als Teil unserer  Sinne bewusst werden, spricht man von Wahrnehmung.
