Ein Stent ist ein medizinisches Implantat, das in bestimmte Organe eingebracht wird, um ihre Wand ringsum abzustützen. Es handelt sich um ein kleines Gittergerüst in Röhrchenform aus Metall oder Kunststoff.Verwendung finden Stents zum einen in Blutgefäßen, speziell den Herzkranzgefäßen, um nach deren Aufdehnung (PTCA) einen erneuten Verschluss zu verhindern; eine solche Behandlung wird als Stentangioplastie bezeichnet. Zum anderen dienen Stents in der Krebsbehandlung dazu, durch bösartige Tumoren verursachte Verengungen von Atemwegen (Luftröhre), Gallenwegen oder der Speiseröhre nach einer Aufdehnung offenzuhalten.

Lo stent è una struttura metallica cilindrica a maglie che viene introdotta nel lume dell’arteria e viene fatta espandere a livello dell’ostruzione fino a che il suo diametro è pari a quello originario del vaso. In questo modo si riduce la stenosi (ossia il restringimento), sia in fase acuta che a lungo termine.
