Stefán is a common first name in Iceland. Stefan is oorspronkelijk een Griekse voornaam. De naam Stefan komt oorspronkelijk van het woord Στέφανος (Stephanos) dat kroon of krans betekent. De naam Stefan komt voor in Vlaanderen en Nederland, hoewel de variante Steven ook vrij frequent is. In Duitsland en Scandinavië komt ook Stefan voor, alhoewel in Duitsland vaker de schrijfwijze Stephan gebruikt wordt.
