Germany is made up of sixteen (singular , colloquially [but rarely in a legal context] called , for "federated state") which are partly sovereign constituent states of the Federal Republic of Germany. Land literally translates as "country", and constitutionally speaking, they are constituent countries. Often referred to in English by German speakers as "states", the term "Land" (with an uppercase 'L') is used in the official English version of the Basic Law and in UK parliamentary proceedings. However, it is sometimes translated as "federal states" in other publications.

Ein Land (in der juristischen Fachsprache selten, in der Standardsprache auch Bundesland genannt) ist nach der föderalen Verfassungsordnung der Bundesrepublik Deutschland einer ihrer teilsouveränen Gliedstaaten. Derzeit wird die Bundesrepublik aus 16 Ländern gebildet.

Tyskland är en förbundsrepublik som utgörs av ett antal delstater eller förbundsländer (ty. Bundesland eller mer egentligt Land). Sedan 1990 består förbundsrepubliken av 16 länder. Länderna är egna folkrättsliga subjekt - ur ett juridiskt perspektiv är det länderna som bildat förbundsrepubliken och inte förbundsrepubliken som indelats i delstater.
