The Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (MfS / Ministry for State Security), commonly known as the Stasi (from Staatssicherheit), was the main security (secret police) and intelligence organization of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). The Stasi was headquartered in East Berlin, with an extensive complex in Lichtenberg and several smaller complexes throughout the city. It was widely regarded as one of the most effective – and repressive – intelligence and secret police agencies in the world. The Stasi's motto was "Schild und Schwert der Partei" (Shield and Sword of the Party), showing its connections to the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, the equivalent to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Another term used in earlier years to refer to the Stasi was Staatssicherheitsdienst (State Security Service).

Le ministère de la Sécurité d’État (, MfS), dit la Stasi, était le service de police politique, de renseignements, d'espionnage et de contre-espionnage du régime communiste de la République démocratique allemande (RDA), créé le 8 février 1950. La Stasi était souvent désignée par l'expression « bouclier et épée du parti » (« Schild und Schwert der Partei ») par la propagande du régime.

Das Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (Abkürzung: „MfS“, umgangssprachlich „Stasi“) war der Inlands- und Auslandsgeheimdienst der DDR und zugleich Ermittlungsbehörde (Untersuchungsorgan) für „politische Straftaten“. Eine innerhalb und außerhalb der DDR gebräuchliche Bezeichnung für das Ministerium war auch „Staatssicherheit“. Das MfS war vor allem ein Unterdrückungs- und Überwachungsinstrument der SED gegen die Bevölkerung der DDR zur Sicherung ihrer Macht. Dabei setzte es neben massiver Überwachung und Einschüchterung auch Terror und Folter von Oppositionellen und Regimekritikern als Mittel ein.

Stasi è l'abbreviazione di Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, "Ministero per la Sicurezza di Stato", abbreviato in MfS o popolarmente in Stasi appunto. La Stasi era la principale organizzazione di sicurezza e spionaggio della Germania Est (DDR).Il Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (Ministero della Sicurezza di Stato) venne fondato l'8 febbraio 1950. Wilhelm Zaisser ne fu il suo primo direttore e Erich Mielke il suo vice. Venne modellato sul KGB sovietico, che lo reputava come estremamente leale ed efficace, tra i vari servizi segreti delle nazioni del Patto di Varsavia. L'influenza della Stasi su praticamente tutti gli aspetti della vita nella Repubblica Democratica Tedesca non deve essere sottostimata.
